With the publicity generated by the documentary "End of the Line" the public has the right to be concerned about fish stocks. However please keep these points in mind;

  • SA has one fishery MSC certified as sustainable - Lakes and Coorong Fishery
  • SA has two species endorsed by the Aust Conservation Foundation – Coorong Mullet and SA King Prawn
  • Degradation of habitat and pollution are the TWO MOST SIGNIFICANT ISSUES in the preservation of fish stocks i.e.loss of seagrass beds and destruction of mangrove areas where the majority of fish species breed and juveniles are protected
  • Desalination plants have an unknown impact on fish stocks, there are several of these touted for SA around our gulfs.

Excerpts from Press release from Wildcatch Fisheries SA, by Chair Dr Gary Morgan

 “The fishing industry is a strong supporter of marine parks”, said Mr. Morgan,
“because we recognise that the livelihoods of commercial fishers and the rural
communities they support, are dependent on a healthy marine environment. We also
recognise the immense value of recreational fishing to South Australians and their
families.”

“Unlike some other parts of the world, South Australia is a world leader in managing
its fisheries sustainably”, he added, “with a recent independent assessment by the
University of British Columbia rating Australia number 2 of 53 countries in the world
for achieving sustainable fish stocks.”

The Public are urged to only buy fish from licensed fishers and processors
